Group Warm Up Ideas

A connection group is all about making a connection with other people. Print out this list of warm up ideas and try one of them at your next group meeting to help people make that initial connection.

Introductions

Instruct everyone to take a few minutes to introduce themselves to someone in the group they don't know very well (preferably man to man and woman to woman.) Find out each other's names, name of each other's significant other, names of children, and one fact unique to that person. After everyone has had a chance to visit, take turns introducing each other to the group.

Then discuss these questions:

  • What do you find fun about getting to know someone new?

  • What aspects are intimidating or difficult?

  • In what ways is introducing someone to others like or unlike introducing someone to Christ?

People Bingo

On a piece of paper, create a five-by-five table. This is the bingo card. In each square, list potential experiences that will be true of different individuals (such as "born in another state"; "married high school sweetheart"; "never used a cell phone"; "has a cat"; "has a dog"; etc.)

Copy and distribute the cards. Group members will then search for others who are a match for the various experiences. When someone finds a match, have that person initial the appropriate box. The catch is that group members need to have a different person for each box, and a person can only sign off one time for a given item. For example, if Joe has Mary sign off on his card as the person who has a dog, Mary cannot sign off for that same item on anyone else's card.

You can play this a couple of different ways: Play until someone gets five in a row (up, down or diagonally) or you can play with the goal of seeing how many total squares people can find matches for in a set amount of time (three minutes.)

Believe It Or Not

Have each group member write an amazin, unique or unusual (but unknown) fact about him or herself and an index card. Collect the cards and then pass out paper with each group member's name listed next to a blank space. As you read each of the cards aloud, have group members use their lists to record their guesses about whom each fact belongs to. See who can correctly match the most facts with the names.

The value of this exercise is in the conversations that will arise as people ask for explanations of the things they discover about each other.

Back To Nature

Choose one of the following questions to have each person answer and share with the group:

  • What outdoor activities do you enjoy doing?

  • If you're married, what's one thing you've learned about your spouse by spending time together in the great outdoors that you didn't know when you first were married?

  • When have you see or experienced evidence of God in nature

Superheroes

Form two groups. Have one group talk about the way the characters below are like God, and ask the other group to discuss how they are unlike God.

  • Greek and Roman gods and goddesses

  • Superheroes from movies, TV shows and comic books

  • Actors who have portrayed God or Jesus in movies and on TV

Ask each subgroup to report on it's discussions and then have the whole group discuss the questions below:

  • What are some things that many people seem to believe about God but aren't necessarily supported by Scripture?

  • What do you think are the primary sources of information about God for most people?

Descriptions

Give each person an index card. Have each person select one or two people from the list of names below and list a few words at the top of their card they think best describes the person they chose.

Albert Einstein          Helen Keller          Oprah Winfrey          Martha Stewart

Billy Graham            Apostle Paul          Jennifer Lopez          Tiger Woods

Jackie Chan              Tom Hanks           President Bush          Martin Luther King, Jr.

Queen Esther            Dr. Phil                Paris Hilton              Ghandi

Have each person share who they selected and the words they used to describe the person.

Then, discuss the following questions:

  • If you asked a child to describe God, what words do you think he or she would use?

  • What are three or four words you's use to describe God?
